Channeling the energy into something people could love

alexis fasoli Shop

I was an artist trapped in the chains of a classical education (Political Science graduate from The University of Bristol). Yet, it would take only a few years to cast those chains aside and begin the quest to harness my creativity into a means of making a living.

Earn the privilege to be able to say that I love my work is my motto. The path was not always easy, as I searched for a way to channel my energy into something people could themselves love and desire.

Vidal Sassoon once said that 'the only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary'.

And so it was, I tried my hand at many things to no avail, getting up the next day with new enthusiasm to keep searching for a way to unlock the door.

Finally, I started to use leather to make simple designs, bracelets and belts that progressively evolved into bags, wallets and footwear – all carefully produced in my workshop from start to finish.

Authenic hand made leather accessories, created using traditional techniques, dating back hundreds of years, united with modern design.

The Shop.

My boutique atelier was born on the shores of the Mediterranean after coming to the conclusion that I needed my own space to be able to sell and create my handcrafted goods.

At last I had a space I could design that would be the perfect vehicule to present my work.

In 2010 in partnership with a brilliant ceramist and friend Zita Rodrigues we opened the door to the atelier boutique that I now run on my own in the heart of Barcelona.

The space is designed to open the world of the artisan to the public exposing them to a world of leather-craft with all its' complexities and charm. A place to meet, talk and have coffee and even the odd drink. A refuge where quality and tradition live together.

The Materials.

Leathers are curated for future use and subsequently made available to my clients. A limited amount are up cycled from leather jackets and bags, the majority is locally sourced from towns around Barcelona in order to create a virtuous economic circle supporting local industry.

The same is true of at least 17 models of buckles which are made using the lost wax technique, cast in a local foundry and hand polished in my workshop from solid silver and solid brass.

This is fundamental to my philosophy, as this will help to keep alive the artisanal microcosm that is so delicate and vulnerable to globalisation. We all depend on each other in order to work, like a small and fragile ecosystem, and we must support each other to survive.

The Manufacturing.

The belief that it is possible to face off multinationals and make locally a first class product with almost entirely regionally produced materials, hand crafted and constructed to last the tests of time is not a dream.

An obsession for design perfection, functionality and robustness is rolled together in search of quality and elegance.

At Alexis Fasoli things are made to last, it is the only coherent way as a small producer that I can be a sustainable, responsible manufacturer of leather goods.

To produce a leather bag will always have a cost to the environment, but by making a product that lasts for many years or even decades, the damage caused is substantially mitigated. Leathers are hand dyed in order to avoid unnecessary contamination and hand stitching helps to ensure a longevity that machine sewing can not achieve.

Traditional manufacturing where the emphasis is on providing something unique and special for the customer, while taking into account the stake holders in the community. We do NOT support production aimed only at maximising profit and shareholder value at the cost of the stakeholder.

Some questions, some answers

How do you get your inspiration?

Like so many artists or craftsmen my inspiration comes from nature, my life, the place I live, the people I meet and the trips I take.
Necessity is also a great driver to be creative. If I were not creative I would have to close my business. This is a powerful incentive to create and innovate.

Why do you work alone?
Can I get my purchases gift wrapped?
Can I get a monogram engraved on my purchase?
When will I receive my order?
Can you copy my favourite Hermes bag?
How do I maintain my Alexis Fasoli items?
Do I have to pay a deposit when ordering a custom or bespoke item?
How much does your art cost?

As I make so many products with very different techniques, it is difficult to give an accurate guide to prices, but I will give you a few guidelines so that you can get a rough idea.

Belts would start around 120 euros for classic simple models and could go over a 1000 euros for the more fancy labour intensive designs. Small bags and clutches would probably start around 300 euros and could go to around a 1000 depending on the type of leather and labour intensity. Bigger bags would be made to measure only and tend to cost around 2000 euros or more. Sandals are only made to measure and start at around 300 euros.

Why buy at Alexis Fasoli?
Can I cancel my order?
How do I return a purchase?
How will I know my order has been received?
Where does Alexis Fasoli deliver?
Are you the right guy for the job?
How do I get the right size?

In the heart of Barcelona I carefully craft hand made products for special people that want to stand out. Unique one offs made by myself. Only a handful of items produced every year for the fortunate few that get to own an 'af'.
